Challenging dairy: ethics and impact

In Australia and around the world, dairy products are often marketed as natural, healthy and essential. But what if there's more to the story? The Challenging dairy course invites students to look critically and with empathy at the dairy industry, not just at how cows are treated, but at why we use them at all.

Together, we will explore the ethical, environmental and political impacts of the dairy industry. We'll ask hard questions about what it means to treat sentient beings as property, about the damage dairy causes to the environment, about how it perpetuates health myths about dairy products and how powerful industries shape public opinion and government policy.

Importantly, these lessons go beyond seeing dairy as just a matter of consumer choice or personal preference. They challenge us to consider whether continuing to use cows, calves and other animals for their milk is compatible with our values of fairness, justice and respect for life.

Finally, we'll look ahead: what would a future without dairy look like: a future where the rights of our fellow animals are respected? How are people already creating food systems that no longer rely on exploiting animals? And what role can each of us play in building a world based on justice, fairness and sustainability?

This unit isn't about memorising facts. It's about thinking critically, questioning what we've been taught, and deciding for ourselves what justice for animals really means.
