Sizzle for Change campaign: free vegan sausages for your next BBQ fundraiser or educational event!

Whether you're an animal sanctuary, a sports club, a university, a school or a vegan group doing outreach - we want to help make vegan sausages the star of your next BBQ event.

Vegan Australia's Sizzle for Change campaign aims to:

  • normalise vegan eating by making it easy and accessible,
  • introduce non-vegans to delicious animal-free alternatives and
  • generate revenue for your organisation.

Follow the steps below to apply for a grant from Vegan Australia to support your sausage sizzle.

STEPS
Apply to Vegan Australia to have the cost of your vegan sausages covered, up to the value of $500.
Once approved, purchase your vegan sausages.
Host your sizzle with vegan sausages.
Submit your receipts for reimbursement.
Grant funding is limited and so Vegan Australia will assess each application on its merits and our available funds. Grants are capped at $500 per event. Funding is provided for vegan sausages only and is not available for other vegan alternatives, non-vegan sausages, bread, condiments or other supplies. We prefer grant applications for either fundraising for vegan or animal rights causes and organisations or events that may raise public awareness about veganism or animal rights.

Success stories

We have had a tremendous response to Vegan Australia's Sizzle for Change campaign since it launched in 2024. We are very proud to be able to bring communities together around vegan BBQ fundraisers and to support animal charities, vegan groups and other community organisations. Providing free vegan sausages for fundraisers enables more funds to go directly to organisations in need while helping make vegan sausages the norm!

The funding for this campaign has come from a generous donor specifically for this purpose. All of these funds have gone to support Sizzle for Change grant recipients, with Vegan Australia absorbing administration costs for the campaign.

In our first six months of operations, there were 65 Sizzle for Change events across Australia. Around 40% of the sizzles were held at various Bunnings locations, with 80% of those sizzles selling vegan sausages exclusively.

These fully vegan sizzles present a good opportunity to introduce vegan sausages to the non vegan public, as many people go to Bunnings on the weekend just to get a sausage.

While a few people grumbled about the lack of animal-based options, the overwhelming response was curiosity and excitement, proving that change is sizzling in the right direction!

Almost half of the events supported by our Sizzle for Change campaign were at schools, particularly primary schools. We are very pleased with this result as we believe that childhood is the ideal time to introduce the concepts of animal rights and eating vegan. This helps children make the connection between what they are consuming and their natural concern for animals. See Why childhood may be the ideal period for vegan education.

Among the first organisations to benefit from a Sizzle for Change grant was Animal Liberation Victoria, which hosted a completely vegan sausage sizzle at Bunnings in Port Melbourne. They say that this fundraiser for Liberation Sanctuary was a massive success, selling a whopping 960 vegan sausages, far surpassing expectations.

Animal Liberation Victoria raised over $3,600 to help care for the animals at the sanctuary. They said "We were blown away by the positive response from customers, including many who had never tried a vegan sausage before. Some were hesitant at first, but most came back for seconds, saying they absolutely loved them and were happy they gave them a try!" They also said "Many thanks to Vegan Australia's Sizzle For Change campaign, helping organisations around Australia raise funds and normalise vegan eating."

Some social media comments on our Sizzle for Change campaign:

  • We were overwhelmed by the support from the community, a huge number of people came out in support of the BBQ, with many of our customers extremely happy to finally be able to enjoy a vegan sausage at Bunnings.
  • The event was really busy and overall a great day, we sold out before 12pm and had to source extra vegan sausages from local stores to fill demand!
  • What legends! Love this initiative :)
