Have you ever ordered what you thought was a vegan meal and ended up being served something non-vegan, or even worse, where you suspected there were hidden animal ingredients? Have you ever been told "We don't serve vegan meals" because the staff didn't really know what vegan food is?

This is where the Vegan Australia Accredited Business program comes in. The program is the trusted benchmark for food service businesses committed to serving authentic vegan dishes, enabling their vegan customers to order with confidence.

The program includes a training course for restaurant and cafe managers and staff providing them with the essential skills and knowledge to confidently prepare and label vegan food items for their customers.

When dining at accredited restaurants you will be able to order vegan meals with confidence, knowing that the staff have been trained in using only vegan ingredients and minimising cross contamination.

Accredited restaurants are a vegan's best choice!

Where to find accredited restaurants

You can identify accredited restaurants by the Vegan Australia Accredited Business logo in their window and on their menus, website and social media. You can also find accredited businesses listed on our website and in the Fussy Vegan Pro app, the popular app which helps users easily identify vegan products and restaurants in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand.

In the Fussy Vegan Pro app, when you search under the "Restaurants" tab, you will see accredited restaurants given a priority listing at the top of the results page.

How you can help

We are always looking for more restaurants and cafes to become accredited, so tell the places where you eat about the program and ask them to join up. Just tell them to go to veganaccredited.com to learn all about it. We want to build trust between restaurants and vegan diners.

One of the goals of the program is to encourage more vegan options in restaurants. We even encourage restaurants that don't yet serve any vegan meals to take the course to learn about how easy it is to add vegan dishes to their menus.

Another goal is to help restaurants avoid mistakes. Improper labelling and preparation of vegan food can lead to disappointed customers and negative reviews.

Also in Aotearoa New Zealand

We have also introduced this program to Aotearoa New Zealand, as the Vegan Aotearoa New Zealand Accredited Business program. If you are in Aotearoa, please support accredited restaurants.

Who can certify

Accreditation is open to businesses operating within the food services industry, including restaurants, cafes and other hospitality, as well as institutional bodies such as school canteens and aged care kitchens. Accreditation is only for food services and catering where a food product is directly served to the customer.

Businesses do not have to be exclusively vegan to gain accreditation, however the Vegan Australia Accredited Business trade mark can only be displayed by businesses that have some vegan items on the menu. This means that a business can become accredited before putting any vegan items on their menu.

The difference between vegan accreditation and certification

Vegan Australia runs both the Vegan Australia Certified program and the Vegan Australia Accredited Business program.

Vegan Australia Certified: This applies to vegan products, mainly packaged retail products, including well-known brands available in every supermarket, such as Blackmores, Vegemite, Peters Drumstick and Nuttelex.

Vegan Australia Accredited Business: This applies to retail food businesses where a food product is directly served to the customer, such as restaurants and cafes. It is a training program to ensure that the establishment is knowledgeable about vegan food preparation and labelling.

In summary, certification applies to individual products whereas accreditation is a training program that applies to businesses where a food product is directly served to the customer.

Vegan Australia is an animal rights organisation that campaigns nationally for veganism.
