Looking to cut down on your grocery bill? Switching to a healthy vegan diet may actually cost you less.
While veganism is based on respect for the rights of animals and vegan diets have proven health and environmental benefits, concerns about affordability may present a barrier to dietary change. However, new research highlights that embracing vegan eating may actually save money.
A recent study published by the American Medical Association revealed that participants who transitioned to a vegan diet reduced their food expenses by nearly 20 per cent. Researchers observed 30 individuals who switched to a vegan diet for 16 weeks and compared them with 32 participants who swapped their usual foods for a Mediterranean diet. While the Mediterranean group experienced a slight increase in costs, the vegan group saw significant savings at the checkout.
The vegan diet emphasised fruits, vegetables, legumes and grains without requiring participants to choose budget-friendly options intentionally. Savings were largely attributed to reduced spending on animal products. The study reported that those following the vegan diet saved approximately $2.90 per day by eliminating meat, along with 50 cents each on dairy and added fats. Even with the increases in the cost for vegetables, meat alternatives and grains, participants saved an average of $1.80 daily.
The findings challenge the common perception that following a vegan diet is expensive. Researchers emphasised that vegan diets are not only health-promoting but also cost-effective.
