Where to get your vegan sausages: You will have to obtain the vegan sausages for your BBQ yourself, but there is usually a good range available in most supermarkets, such as Woolworths, Coles and many IGAs. Branches can have varying stock, so you may have to try a few in your area. If you are not sure if the sausages are vegan, please contact us or use the Fussy Vegan Pro app (AU$5.99 for Apple and AU$4.99 for Android) and search for vegan sausages.
Apply: Follow the steps below to apply for a grant from Vegan Australia to support your sausage sizzle.
Conditions: Grant funding is limited and Vegan Australia assesses each application on its merits and our available funds. Grants are capped at $500 per event and are limited to one per year per applicant organisation. Funding is provided for vegan sausages only and is not available for other vegan alternatives, non-vegan sausages, bread, condiments or other supplies. We prefer grant applications for either fundraising for vegan or animal rights causes and organisations or events that may raise public awareness about veganism or animal rights.
Sizzle for Change has received an overwhelming response from communities across Australia. We are very proud to be able to bring people together around vegan BBQ fundraisers and to support animal charities, vegan groups and other community organisations. Providing free vegan sausages for fundraisers enables more funds to go directly to organisations in need while helping make vegan sausages the norm!
So far, around 40% of Sizzle for Change events have been held at various Bunnings locations, with 80% of those sizzles selling vegan sausages exclusively. These fully vegan sizzles present a valuable opportunity to introduce vegan sausages to the wider public, as many people visit Bunnings on weekends specifically for the sausage sizzle. While a few people may grumble about the lack of animal-based options, the overwhelming response is curiosity and excitement, proving that change is sizzling in the right direction!
Almost half of the supported events have been at schools, particularly primary schools. We are very pleased with this result as we believe that childhood is the ideal time to introduce the concepts of animal rights and eating vegan. This helps children make the connection between what they are consuming and their natural concern for animals. See Why childhood may be the ideal period for vegan education.
One of the first organisations to benefit from a Sizzle for Change grant was Animal Liberation Victoria, which hosted a completely vegan sausage sizzle at Bunnings in Port Melbourne. The fundraiser for Liberation Sanctuary was a massive success, selling a whopping 960 vegan sausages and far surpassing expectations.
Animal Liberation Victoria raised over $3,600 to help care for the animals at the sanctuary. They described an overwhelmingly positive response from customers, including many who had never tried a vegan sausage before. Some people were hesitant at first, but many came back for seconds, saying they absolutely loved them and were happy they gave them a try.
