World Day for the End of Fishing

21 Feb 2024

Launched in 2017 in Switzerland, World Day for the End of Fishing (WoDEF) is now used by organisations around the world to raise awareness about aquatic life. It calls public attention to the sentient beings whose lives we usually ignore and who are subjected to routine violence. Fishes, crustaceans, and cephalopods make up the biggest proportion of animals killed by humans, amounting to thousands of billions of victims annually.

WoDEF provides an opportunity to advocate for the abolition of fishing and fish farming. It's held the last Saturday of March every year; this year's campaign will take place on 30 March 2024. This year, WoDEF has organised actions targeting aquaculture farms, which are a source of intense suffering. In fact, aquaculture farms are responsible for up to 26 times more deaths than animal farms on land!
